Promoting sustainable land management practices in the Upper Torrens Catchment
The Upper Torrens Land Management Project is managed by a Project Steering Committee comprising representatives of the State Government [via the AMLRNRMB], local government [The Barossa & Adelaide Hills Councils] and local landowner and community representatives. The Project is funded through the Caring for Our Country Program with support from the SA Department of Water, Land & Biodiversity Conservation. The UTLMP recognises that undertaking projects that benefit our natural resources can be costly and have NRM benefits which extend beyond the farm gate to the wider community.
Hence the program offers financial incentives for individuals or groups on both public and private land to undertake on ground activities that will address priority natural resources management issues. The financial incentives provided are based on cost sharing arrangements with the amount provided by the Project reflective of the environmental benefit gained by the project.
Funding is generally competitive and prioritisation of projects will be based on their benefit towards protecting the catchment's natural resources. However you have to be in it to win it, and the application process is very simple, so you can get stuck in to doing the real work on the ground!
The following information will tell you how you can become involved and outlines some of the regional issues and examples of projects eligible for funding divided into the headings
PROTECTING AND RESTORING NATURAL BIODIVERSITY,
HALTING THE SPREAD OF DRYLAND SALINITY,
PROTECTING OUR RIVERS, RIPARIAN VEGETATION AND AQUATIC LIFE and
MANAGING OUR LAND AND SOILS SUSTAINABLY.
